Spread the music around the world with Folk Spot Denmark 2016

By Morten Alfred Høirup |

Denmark’s largest Roots, Folk and Trad music event is Tønder Festival, and the festival has been celebrating great Danish and international music ever since 1974.

During the last weekend of August, ROSA-folk (the Danish Rock Council’s Folk Music Department) and Tønder Festival supported by, DJBFA (Danish Composers & Songwriters) cooperate, to put international focus on roots and folk music from Denmark, with a number of showcase concerts titled Folk Spot Denmark 2016.

Connecting the artist and the music industry
At the showcases Danish bands meet up with business people from the international folk scene, to talk and to get to know each other during a few hectic festival days

We know from the previous years that such musical showcases combined with exchange of contact information, often lead to an increasing number of concerts, tours and awareness of Danish bands and solo artists, both in Denmark and especially abroad.

During Friday and Saturday Folk Spot Denmark will present seven Danish bands, and a single Norwegian duo, to an audience that is comprised of a mix of Danish Roots and Folk music enthusiasts and international officials and business people, driven and flown to the festival from countries such as Germany, England, Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, the USA and Canada.

We are talking about around 50 music journalists, agents, managers, organizations, and representatives from festivals and venues.

Broad line-up
This is the 5th time that Folk Spot Denmark is having a showcase at Tønder Festival, and once again the line-up of bands represents a very broad part of the Danish Folk music scene.

These are great duos and bands like the pan-Scandinavian violin and flute trio, Fru Skagerrak, the Folk-World band Himmerland, the klezmer band Sherzandum, the ukulele-double bass duo, Elof & Wamberg, the band Basco featuring the Danish-Norwegian singer Jullie Hjetland, the fiddle-guitar duo Fromseier Hockings and the Danish-British fiddle orchestra D.U.K.

Furthermore, the showcase will feature the very talented Norwegian fiddle and Hardangerfele duo Odde & Holmen.

Spreading the word
Fiddler and singer Maja Kjær Jacobsen from Fru Skagerrak explains:

– With a lot of live activities going on already, the goal for us is to keep developing new contacts, and going new places to play. We love spreading the word about the special musical bond and culture found in Scandinavia, and among other things we hope that Folk Spot Denmark can help us get in touch with an agency that can help us achieve that goal!

The eight Folk Spot Denmark concerts will run at Tønder Festival’s “Klubscenen” on Friday and Saturday night, and everybody wearing a festival wristband is invited to join in.

All the concerts will be recorded and filmed, and will be broadcasted during the following weeks at RadioFolk.dk, with interviews featuring the musicians.
