Copenhagen Blues Festival makes Copenhagen resound with the blues
Copenhagen is once again home to the Copenhagen Blues Festival – a festival that offers high quality blues at traditional venues, at Canal Tours and at the Grundtvig’s Church.
From the 22nd of September to the 27th of September the blues will once again sound all over Copenhagen. Since its beginning in 2000 Copenhagen Blues Festival has done its part to promote blues music in Denmark. This year’s festival features 50 concerts at 18 different venues all over Copenhagen. The audience can choose from a variety of international and Scandinavian artists.
Copenhagen Blues Festival is renowned for covering blues style variations, and according to the Vice Chairman Jacob Kragh the ambition for the festival is ‘to present exciting and high-quality music which the audience would not otherwise have heard’. Copenhagen Blues Festival is thrilled to present the new talent Selwyn Birchwood who played at last year’s Chicago Blues Festival. His combination of charm, energy and charisma is sure to captivate the audience at Copenhagen Blues Festival. His concert is at the Bartof Station on Friday 25th.
The Chicago-based blues band Mississippi Heat known for their ‘Traditional Blues with a Unique Sound’ will be playing on Saturday 26th – also at Bartof Station.
At Copenhagen Blues Festival the audience can also experience blues music at nontraditional venues. The Blues Cruises is a combination of a traditional Canal Tour of Copenhagen and a blues concert. The audience can also enjoy a Blues Brunch or attend the Blues Sermon at Gruntvig’s Church on Sunday 27th.
Commemoration of B. B. King
This year’s programme pays homage to the late ‘King of Blues’ – the legendary B. B. King with the concert ‘B. B. King – In Loving Memory’. The concert features Shaka & James Loveless, Mike Andersen, Thorbjørn Risager and Otis Grand. Each artist will present a unique interpretation of B. B. King’s songs. The concert will take place on Thursday 24th at Amager Bio.
At the official opening night, Wednesday 23rd, Copenhagen Blues Festival will present the winners of the two prestigious blues awards; Danish Blues Artist of the Year and Danish Blues Album of the Year. Previous winners of the Danish Blues Artist of the Year will also be playing at this year’s festival.
